Based on my experience, if the display and/or lights are blank, flickering, or otherwise displaying incorrectly, there could either be an issue with the wiring or something damaged on the electronic control unit. If the wall unit is bad and the cell is old, you may want to price out a newer system which could save some money and be an upgrade.
