You should only leave it on for as long as your pool pump is running; on average that is 8-12 hours for most people, but it depends on your pool's needs. Adjust the percentage up or down according to how much your chlorine your pool needs (keep it between 1-3 ppm free chlorine). Polarity will alternate between + and - automatically, that's normal and there is no functional difference.
