How long can you expect this system last? Also is there ever difficulties with it working because the water is too low since you just hook it on the edge of your pool?

It's lifespan will ultimately depend of use and how big of a pool you put it on, I'd estimate 1-3 years for many people. It's warranted for one year. You would want to make sure your pool doesn't drop too low, it definitely needs to be covered by water. It is fairly tall though. If you want a longer lasting more built in system, take a look at the SJ-15 salt system
