We are experimenting with using this device to catch carbonate scaling before returning to the pool by installing this AFTER the salt cell. Is there any reason we shouldn't be doing that?

If you're getting frequent or heavy mineral scaling on your salt cell, that is typically able to be addressed by balancing the water chemistry, especially the LSI (Saturation Index). This cyclonic filter is adept at capturing debris that is heavier than the water.
