Our big issue is hemlock needles. Much shorter than typical evergreen needles at about 1-1.5in so they get through the skimmer and filter baskets and once they clog the de filter they also don't rinse out with a backwash. But they are light enough to float. Will this pre filter help or will they get through because they aren't heavy enough?

The rule of thumb is if it sinks, a centrifugal prefilter will capture it; if it floats, its gets carried past by the water. That's not hard and fast, but it basically depends if the particulate is has enough mass that the spinning action funnels it into the collection chamber. The majority of what gunks up a filter is going to be caught be this, but some things like hair for example is very easy to just get carried along and out by the water.
