I need to replace my 12 year old Jandy 1400 system with the old square cell. The current cell location is vertical and in a tight spot. Do I need to completely remove both couplings and lengthen or shorten the space for the SJ or RJ cell?

Yes, you would need to remove the Jandy unions, since there isn't another system that you could switch to that would be able to directly connect to those existing unions. The SJ model would require a smaller amount of space, as would the RJ model if you also use its Vertical Installation Kit.
