I run my filter continuously from spring opening to fall closing, will this work with the SJ-40 or do you need a timer?

That can work. The salt system's controller is adjustable, so if you run it for longer then you simply set it to a lower power level to compensate. Unless there is a reason, you may benefit though from putting the pump and salt system on a timer together.
