Good question - yes, you can clean the SJ-Series cell like an ordinary salt system with a one part muriatic acid and four part water solution. However, you don't need to remove every single bit of the mineral buildup, you just need to make sure its not caked up between the plates. It is ok if there is a small residue remaining.
