You can see the bypass assembly at the link below, which has example images. Its ready out of the box for installation which is convenient, or if desired you can also get your own plumbing parts to install it the same way. Basically the water goes in the bottom and out the top just like the normal prefilter, but when the time comes to add DE powder to recharge your DE filter, you can just turn a valve to route the water around it. That way the pre-filter doesn't catch the powder, which would be counter productive. In your case with vacuuming a heavy load of hair, that might also be a very good application.
