Does this wear out over time?Mine that I installed a few years ago seems to have become less effective. I clean it at least annually but even without mineral buildup its not as effective as it once was.

When a salt cell finally wears out, you'll get an error light because the system can detect its not working. If it seems harder to maintain the CL level, that typically indicates something causing higher chlorine demand in the pool water chemistry. This can be very common.
