From my experience with most pools that size, it would be pretty likely that you would want a 3hp variable speed pump.
For a 40K gallon pool, would the recommendation be a 3.0HP or 2.0HP pump? CircuPool SmartFlo® Variable Speed Pool Pump - 3.0 THP Pumps
