UV systems are essentially an "add-on" or upgrade. UV systems are a really excellent way to reduce the chlorine demand of the water and a great way to achieve even higher purity water. UV systems on their own basically prevent microorganisms from reproducing and break apart chemical byproducts that might occur when there is insufficient sanitation in the pool, however UV systems do not provide "oxidation" (a necessary part of water sanitation) and they do not provide and residual sanitation protection.
