A flow switch typically requires only 20-30 gallons per minute of flow to activate. Run time is completely dependent on the unique set up (pool size, weather, pool usage, water balance, etc...). On a proper, typically-sized set up, it would be normal to run a chlorine generator 8-12 hours a day. If you have a beneficially "over-sized" chlorine generator, this could be much less. If you are setting up a variable speed pump that runs long hours and energy-saving low speed operation, you'll likely want to just allow the chlorine generator to run and much lower output setting, so that within running a day or two the free chlorine level in the water stabilizes within 1-3 ppm. It will likely take some trial and error since every pool has different needs.
