what do you do in the winter in California? its says cold water and my pool is growing yellow algae ? is there an override?

What is your water temperature? Typically algae doesn't grow in water that is too cold to run a salt chlorinator - if it is, you may want to add algaecide and check for phosphates & nitrates in the water and remove any level that may have built up.
