With a salt chlorinator, you can turn down its settings and also reduce its run time (even less than the pump runs, if needed), so within reason a "large" salt chlorinator can work with much smaller pools. As mentioned, having extra capacity means the system works less hard, lasts longer, and can create more chlorine more quickly on demand should a pool problem arise.
