A timer is suggested for most pools, so that you can easily and automatically turn your salt chlorinator and existing pump on and off together. It's not required though - for example, people with variable speed pumps use the built-in pump controls, and then this Universal40 control module activates and deactivates its self via its flow switch when it see the water start and stop moving.
